Apart from the Departments, Special Divisions and Units within the Education Secretariat Head Quarters, there are major Boards and Departments through which the Secretariat delivers its mandate of providing accessible and qualitative education to FCT residents. These boards are presented as follows:

Universal Basic Education Board

The Board came into existence after the enactment of the UBE law in 2004 and was formally inaugurated on 15th November, 2005 by the then FCT Minister, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai. However, the Board had existed as Primary Education Board (PEB) before it metamorphosed into the current status when Nigeria started the UBE programme, The Board has an Executive Chairman, 2 Permanent Board members, a Board Secretary, and 8 part time members. These members are drawn from Area Councils, Traditional rulers, Education Secretariat as well as Federal Ministry of Education.  www.fctubeb.org

Organizational Structure of the Universal Basic Education Board

The Board has 6 Divisions: Administration and Supply; Finance and Accounts; Physical Planning and Project Monitoring; Planning Research and Statistics; Primary  School Services and Social Mobilization Apart from these Divisions, there are also other functional units that report directly to the Board Chairman, such as Quality Assurance, Legal, Information and Audit. This structure also exists at the Local Education Authorities as Sections  

Functions the Universal Basic Education Board

The major function of the Board is to provide education at the basic level, which is primary and junior secondary for children of ages 6 to 14. It also provides affordable access to pre-primary education, known as Early Child care Development and Education to children of ages 3 to 5. Presently it manages 182 Early Child Care Development Education (ECCDE) centres, 477 primary schools and , 96 Junior Secondary Schools.  Within the primary education level, there are 3 schools for children with Special Needs, 28 Nomadic Schools and 2 Integrated Qua’ranic schools. It undertakes new capital projects and renovates existing ones that fall under this education sub-sector It also recruits that teaching and non-teaching staff of the schools The functions of the Board all derive from its mandate and if well implemented should facilitate the objectives of the UBE and actualisation of EFA and MDGs..
The Board has recorded major achievements in national and international competitions like the SAGE and other Science competitions.

FCT Secondary Education Board

The FCT Secondary Education Board was established in accordance with the provisions of part V section 11-14 of the National Secondary Education Commission act of 1999. It was inaugurated by Mr. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Mallam Nasir El-Rufai on Tuesday 28th December, 2004. It is headed by an executive Chairman who is the chief executive. There is also a Board Secretary who takes charge of the administrative and financial support services of the Board, 2 Permanent Board members and Part Time board members. There are 3 professional service Divisions headed by Deputy Directors namely: Schools Services, Co-curricular and Planning and Development Divisions.

Functions of the Secondary Education Board

The Board has the statutory responsibility to manage senior public secondary schools in the FCT. Presently there are 55 Senior Secondary Schools in the FCT. There are Divisions at the Board. It undertaking new capital projects and renovates existing ones that fall under this education sub-sector It also recruits that teaching and non-teaching staff of the schools.   www.fctseb.org

FCT Scholarship Board

The FCT Scholarship Scheme which has been in existence since the 1980s started as a unit under the Department of Education, later moved under the office of the Secretary for Education in 2006 until 23rd August 2010 when it was upgraded to the status of a Board by the FCT EXCO.


Vision
To serve as a veritable platform for the provision of educational assistance (Scholarship) to indigenous and indigent pupils and students of FCT


Mission
To provide educational assistance (Scholarship) to indigenous and indigent pupils and students of FCT at all levels of the educational enterprise across gender that are needs and merit based to enable them acquire pertinent knowledge for sustainable development
